I was fortunate to have worked extensively in the USSR from 1989 for 14 years, through Perestroika and Glasnost. Despite visiting so many mining and mineral locations I didn’t get the chance to visit Karelia – but maybe, one day I will.

What is Shungite?

Shungite is a Precambrian carbonaceous natural rock of organic origin. It is often referred to as a “healing stone” or even a “stone of life” due to its powerful healing and protective properties. Shungite is approximately 2 billion years old and it was formed long before life existed on our planet. Thus, it has been soaking up the energy of the Earth and space for eons. These powerful energies, along with its chemical composition and physical characteristics make Shungite truly unique and thanks to that, it is popular all over the world.
 

Where does Shungite come from?

Shungite is found almost exclusively in the Republic of Karelia, the Russian Federation, where there are over 1 billion tons of Shungite. The largest Shungite deposit in the world is called Zazhoginsky mine at it is located on Zaonezhie peninsula, Medvezhyegorsky District in Karelia, near Shunga village which gave the rock its name.

 

What makes Shungite so special? 

In a large part it is due to its unique structure comprised of fullerenes, which is an extremely rare chemical bond of atoms of carbon. Fullerenes are believed to be one of the most powerful antioxidants that shield our bodies from the effects of free radicals and other negative and harmful influences in our environment. The spherical molecules of fullerene in Shungite make it one of the most effective means of personal protection, healing, and water cleansing. Elite Shungite is the type of Shungite with the highest amount of carbon, so it has the largest number of fullerenes and thus is the most effective type.

 

 

What is the difference between Elite and regular Shungite? What are the three types of Shungite?

Shungite stones can be divided into three types depending on the amount of carbon.

• Type I Shungite is called Noble or Elite Shungite and it contains from 90 to 98 per cent of carbon in it. Elite Shungite nuggets have shiny silvery surface and have a great energetic potential due to the high percentage of carbon. The deposits of Elite Shungite are extremely scarce and Elite Shungite amounts for less than one per cent of all Shungite found in the world. It is usually dug carefully by hand in rocks while types II and III Shungite are more available for an industrial digging in quarries.

• Type II Shungite got his name from the Russian Emperor, Peter the Great, and is known as Petrovsky Shungite. This type of Shungite is quite rare and contains about 75% of carbon. It can also be easily cut and polished like regular Shungite, but in terms of properties and crystal energy Petrovsky Shungite is closer to Type I, Elite Shungite. 

• Type III Shungite is usually called regular Shungite stone or ore and it contains from 30 to 50 per cent of carbon. All the shaped products you will find like pyramids, spheres, bracelets, etc. are made of regular Shungite since it amounts for the largest part of Shungite found in Karelia and can be easily shaped and polished. 

 

Please note, later in this document there is reference to only two types of Shungite which is the pure scientific mineral assessment of Shungite. Type II (Petrovsky) is not recognised as a distinctly separate type of Shungite

What makes Elite Shungite so special? How to use Elite Shungite to its full potential?

Elite Shungite stones appear to be a perfect natural healer and energy stabilizer. Elite Shungite nuggets are frequently sold in its original form since they are very fragile. What type of Shungite is more efficient when it comes to Shungite water?

Regular Shungite contains from 35 to 60 percent of organic carbon while the percentage of carbon in Elite Shungite is much higher - from 92 to 98 per cent. Thanks to this, Elite Shungite is more efficient in making energised water since it has a higher energy potential and therefore potentially more effective healing properties.

How to make a Shungite bath?    

Shungite water is also designed for making Shungite baths that are very popular since taking a bath with Shungite water benefits your health, well-being, growth and recovery. To make a Shungite bath infuse 400-500 grams of Shungite stones into the bath with hot water and keep them there about for 15-20 minutes. Then take a healing bath and enjoy the positive changes Shungite gives to your physical and spiritual health. It is recommended to have a Shungite bath regularly, approximately three times a week.

How does Shungite affect water pH level?   

Shungite should lower pH levels of your drinking water. Shungite water’s pH after the first couple of hours is around 5,5, which makes it more acidic and they say it can be very healthy for external use to cure skin diseases, as well as for internal use to battle respiratory diseases, headaches, joint and muscle pains. After keeping Shungite in water for more than 6 hours, it should become a healthy alkaline water, with 7-7,5 pH, which is considered a good level for regular drinking water. Note: UK tap water should be between 6.5 and 9.5 and pH levels can vary significantly from region to region.

What is alkaline water?

Alkaline water is water with a high pH rating, meaning that it is more alkaline and less acidic than tap water. A neutral pH rating is a 7—anything above it is considered alkaline, whilst anything below it is considered acidic.

The pH rating of water can be changed by adding ingredients to it to make it more acidic or more alkaline. By drinking alkaline water, you can alkalise your own body, bringing it back into balance and doing away with the problems associated with having an acidic body. There are many recipes online about making alkaline water.

How to cleanse my Shungite water stones?  

Also do the following procedure once a month or bimonthly to restore the filtering capacity of the stone. Use acidic water by mixing one litre of warm water with some acidic liquids, for example lemon juice in a proportion of one spoon of acid to a litre of water to clean the stones. Put your stones to the mix and keep it like this for several hours or more. It helps to get rid of artifacts on the surface of the stones that may have accumulated by immersion in your drinking water.

 

Elite Shungite powder use?

The main advantage of pure powder is that it’s a carrier of 100% natural and strongest anti-oxidants we know of. What is the difference between polished and non-polished Shungite?

However, it is recommended to use Elite Shungite nuggets for both water purification and spiritual healing, and Elite Shungite is usually used in its raw form without being subject to carving or polishing since it is very fragile.

 

How to check the authenticity of Shungite?

You should always make sure that the Shungite you have ordered is an authentic one.

If Shungite is selling cheaply online then most probably you should steer clear of that seller and buy from a trusted source. Ask for authentication such as the mineral composition certificate or QA (quality assurance) certificates, which will have been provided by the mine or an authorised mine wholesaler. The Earthstore is restricted from making its certificates available publicly on their website but are available upon request from a customer. Alternatively, the authenticity of the Shungite pieces can be checked with a simple test. One unique way of authentic Shungite is an electrical conductive test. You can take a battery, bulb and two wires and make a simple electrical loop, connecting battery to bulb with one wire and another connecting the bulb with a Shungite stone. The Shungite is authentic if you see the bulb light up due to the high-carbon conductive content in Shungite, which is exceedingly rare among stones. 

 

I have received an Elite Shungite nugget, but it seems to me that there is rust on the stone. Does it mean that my Shungite is fake?

 

7 Elite Noble Shungite with Pyrites

If you have received an Elite Shungite nugget and it has rust in it, you should not worry. The rust in your Elite Shungite is the result of the crystal corrosion and oxidsation or chemical erosion of the stone which is quite common. Sometimes Shungite nuggets become a little rusted if they are being used for water purification, or they come with iron infusions that are the source of rust. It is a normal chemical process. If it bothers you, you can get rid of rust by yourself using a needle or a toothbrush but keep in mind that even with a little rust the Shungite stones are safe.
 

Shungite that I receive leaves black stains on my skin and clothes. Is there a way to clean the stones to get rid of residue?

If your Shungite leaves black stains, don’t be alarmed. Authentic regular Shungite stones in their raw form leave black residue due to the high carbon proportion in them. We recommend washing Shungite pieces carefully under warm water to get rid of micro-dust and powder, which leaves those stains, as well as to cleanse the stones before using it. After you have washed it several times, the amount of residue will significantly diminish.

Shungite that I received has infusions of brown, grey or golden colours. Does it mean that my Shungite is fake?

If your Shungite piece has different infusions, don’t panic. It normal that Shungite stones can have infusions of other minerals, including golden-coloured pyrite. It does not mean that your Shungite mineral is fake, it means that in the place where the stone was mined there were veins of other minerals nearby. Just enjoy your stone, especially since with other minerals, it can have additional properties of those minerals.

 

How to cleanse and charge Shungite?

Your Shungite stones can be used repeatedly if you regularly clean and recharge the crystals. To clean the Shungite products wash your Shungite pieces under warm running water for several minutes or place Shungite under direct sunlight for the whole day. You can also charge your Shungite in its water jug. The same can be done with the moonlight and the whole night. You can also clean it with candlelight and incense smoke. Another important aspect of crystal cleansing is using power of other crystals which have cleansing properties. These actions will clean and recharge your Shungite pieces and will allow you to use it effectively again.

The Science – for those interested….

From a scientific point of view, Shungite is a fullerene-like, non-graphite carbonaceous substance. Shungite is a rare form of minerals. A feature of this mineral is its unique chemical composition, the main element of which is a unique form of carbon. Shungite fullerene it is form of carbon that is contained in Shungite stone. Even more unique this mineral makes the fact that this mineral is extracted only in one place on earth. This region is the Republic of Karelia in Russia. Currently, it is the only natural material on the planet earth in which fullerenes were discovered in their natural state.

Discovery of fullerenes

Fullerenes are a rather unusual class of molecules that represent one of the forms of carbon existence (the so-called allotropic modifications). The well-known diamond and graphite are also nothing but different allotropic forms of carbon. Fullerenes in Shungite are in the form of molecules C60 and C70

The discovery of fullerenes is one of the clearest examples of the predictive power of science: back in the 70s, theoretical quantum chemical calculations were made, predicting the existence of such molecules, but only in 1985 they were first discovered in the study of graphite vapours after its laser irradiation. Later these allotropic forms have been identified in the earth’s natural minerals. To be more precise — it is a one-of-a-kind mineral – Shungite. FACT: recently it was found that these unique carbon balls are even in the outer nebulae of space.

 

Structural state of fullerene-like forms of carbon

The current understanding of the structural state of fullerene-like forms of carbon and their relationship to Genesis is very uncertain.

Published papers present often contradictory results about the conditions of their synthesis and structure. There is no consensus about the origin of the fullerenes found in various rocks. This situation is caused both by problems in analysing fullerenes and by the fact that natural non-crystalline carbon matter is much more complex than its crystalline forms.

 

Use of fullerenes

Physicists and chemists have found many uses for fullerenes. This are used in the synthesis of new compounds in optics, the production of conductors and in the fields of fundamentals. Also, applied Sciences with use in atomic structure. Studies in biology have found the ability of fullerenes to fight against substances that inhibit the oxidation of healthy cells of the human body and animals. This gave a new vector of development of the use of fullerenes for the benefit of human health. In 2012 the publication was published, which attracted the attention of gerontologists — specialists working on the problems of aging. In this work, Tarek Baati and co-authors demonstrated impressive results — rats fed a suspension of fullerenes in olive oil, lived twice as long as usual, and, moreover, showed increased resistance to toxic factors.

 

Shungite fullerenes in water

Fullerenes in Shungite were found as molecules C60 and C70. It was found that the unusual molecules have a hydrated form, allowing them to dissolve in water. Perhaps this is an explanation for the theories in the field of scientific studies of the beneficial properties of water that has been in contact with this mineral. Also, as Shungite suspensions, which are obtained by mixing with olive oil. There are two types of Shungite in Karelia. It is classic and elite.

Exceptionally clean water in a natural reservoir, one of the cleanest in the world (cleaner than Lake Baikal) – is lake Onega. Because the lake bottom and banks are composed of Shungite.

 

Perhaps the solution to the problems of providing high-quality drinking water to all the inhabitants of the Mother Earth should be looked at by natural filtration through the integrated use of various filtering minerals such as zeolite and particularly Shungite.
